On December 31, 2007, crossing the international border won’t be as easy as flashing a driver’s license to U-S customs officers.
By then, Canadians entering and Americans re-entering the U-S will be required to have passports.
For individuals on both sides of the border it will be costly, but Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP Ken Boshcoff believes it is now reality.

For air and sea travel between Canada and the U-S, passport requirements will kick in one year earlier – December 31, 2006.
Boshcoff believes cross border trade should not be hurt but he adds tourism may take a hit from the new rules in the long run.
