Passport requirements may hurt tourism

New regulations for crossing the international border could have an impact on tourism in Northwestern Ontario.

On December 31, 2007, Canadians entering and Americans
re-entering the U-S will be required to show passports to customs officers instead of only a driver’s license.

Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP Ken Boshcoff fears many Americans may not want the hassle of getting a passport to come to Canada.

For air and sea travel between Canada and the U-S, passport requirements will kick in one year earlier – December 31, 2006.

Although tourism may take a hit, Boshcoff believes cross border trade will not be impacted in the long run.
