MPP’s at Queen’s Park have taken the rare step of paying tribute to a civilian.
Both Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford and Kiiwetinoong Sol Mamakwa rose Monday in the Ontario Legislature to remember the life of Steven Fobister Sr. from the Grassy Narrows First Nation.
Fobister passed away last Thursday at the age of 66 from complications due to mercury poisoning.
Fobister was both a Chief of Grassy Narrows, a Grand Chief of Treaty Three and a Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.
Mamakwa says Fobister would want them to fight until the fish from the English-Wabigoon River system are safe to eat and the water is safe to drink.
He calls him a tireless advocate and a fighter for aboriginal people and the younger generation.
Rickford says he had the honour of working with Fobister for a number of years, calling him “an incredible man” and an “incredible leader”.
A traditional funeral service will be held Tuesday in Grassy Narrows.
