Child welfare and education funding are two topics which are dominating discussions at the Nishnawbe Aski Chief’s Assembly in Thunder Bay.
Deputy Grand Chief Derek Fox believes child welfare problems have been going on for far too long.
He says First Nations leadership must work collaboratively with NAN members and government to find a solution.
Fox says too many of their children are being taken away from their families.
In terms of education, Fox says they must address the issues of funding and retaining and attracting qualified teachers to Indigenous communities.
He says currently in Fort Albany and Kashechewan, they are without Grade 7 and 8 teachers.
Fox adds a number of instructors don’t have the resources needed to do their job properly.
