The Nishnawbe Aski Nation is calling on the government to take action on soaring suicide rates in area First Nations communities.
An aboriginal led report from 2009-2011 indicates an estimated 600-children and youth thought about or tried to take their own life or actually committed suicide.
Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler says there needs to be a Special Emergency Task Force established to address the issue.
Fiddler says the report provides a number of “disturbing findings.”
Aboriginal Affairs Minister David Zimmer says he will be meeting with his government to discuss how the Province can help stem First Nations youth suicides.
Zimmer says he’ll be sharing the report with his Deputy Minister and the rest of cabinet and address the issue in a “meaningful way”.
