The area’s top native leader is slamming the OPP for commendations it handed out last week in Dryden.
Nishnawbe-Aski Grand Chief Stan Beardy says one award was for exemplary performance in the Pikangikum First Nation dispute last year and the other, a bravery award for the officer who shot a Grassy Narrows woman in Kenora.
Not only does Beardy call the awards unnecessary and glorified, but adds, it sends a wrong message to First Nations.
OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis stated the awards were for the officers use of restraint and bravery during difficult circumstances.
