National Chief Still Working With Government On Two Key Issues

The National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations says a number of unresolved issues remain with both levels of government.

Speaking in Washagamis Bay First Nation, Perry Bellegarde outlined his key priorities for the remainder of this year, including tackling the issue of dealing with children in care.

Bellegarde says the child welfare system in Ontario needs to be fixed.

He says the government needs to respect First Nations jurisdiction over child welfare both on-reserve and off-reserve.

Bellegarde says his other key priority is getting MP’s in the House of Commons to pass the Indigenous Languages Act this Fall, before they move into a Federal election campaign.

He did credit the Trudeau Government for promising $17-billion in funding over the next five years.
