Navigational Aides Could be in Trouble

The future of navigational aids on the Red Lake-Gullrock Lake system could be in jeopardy if more volunteers don’t come forward.
The Red Lake Safe Waters Association took over the job of maintaining the buoys and lights in 1998 when the Canadian Coast Guard pulled out.
Association President Keith Hunkin says memberships have dropped 50% in 2 years and funds for gas and equipment to keep the aides in place are starting to dry up.
The group maintains 77 buoys covering an area of over 67,000 acres.
