NDP Critic Calling For Winter Road Maintenance Changes

The provincial NDP is pushing for the release of a new agreement the province has signed with Carillion Canada.

Carillion is responsible for winter road maintenance in parts of the province, including some highways in the Thunder Bay district.

Transportation Critic Wayne Gates says a deal was struck following the collapse of its parent company, however no details were released.

Gates says creditor protection filings show Carillion only had enough cash to continue operations until February 17th, and that it owed $750-million.

He notes workers are worried that their paychecks won’t be there for them when the bills are due.

Gates adds workers shouldn’t be forced to settle and simply take the Wynne Liberals at their word that highway snow clearing will continue.

He is asking the government to restore winter road maintenance to the public sector.
