Thomas Mulcair is rallying the troops in northwestern Ontario.
The federal NDP party leader met with about 300 supporters in Thunder Bay on the weekend, as part of a pre-election Ontario campaign-style tour.
Mulcair made some promises to improve roads here in the north.
He says they will start by transferring an additional cent of the existing gas tax to municipalities for their infrastructure needs.
Mulcair didn’t announce much of anything new, focusing mostly on the NDP’s promise of a $15 minimum wage, restoring door-to-door mail delivery, and help for small businesses.
He’s also pledging financial support for the Shoal Lake Freedom Road if elected in the upcoming election.
Mulcair is also promising to restore relations with First Nations at the Cabinet level by respecting Treaty rights and Canada’s international obligations.
When asked about funding for the Ring of Fire in northern Ontario, Mulcair would only say the NDP will sit down with any province or territories to go over the specifics of individual projects.
He adds they are committed in moving forward on any mining project.
