Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP John Rafferty says he understands why Conservative MP Brent Rathgeber decided to step down.
Rathgeber is blaming his resignation on what he’s calling the Harper government’s lack of commitment to transparency.
Rafferty says he’s absolutely correct.
He says the Conservative government talks about transparency and being completely open and honest, but stresses it’s the furthest from the truth.
Rafferty says Prime Minister Harper is controlling his caucus and private members bills.
The NDP member claims there are a lot of unhappy Conservative MP’s and notes there’s trouble in the ranks.
Rathgeber, the Edmonton-St. Albert M-P, says he’s had doubts for about a year, but the final straw was the Harper government’s decision to water down his private member’s bill to expose the salaries of senior federal civil servants.
He wanted to set the transparency bar at $188,000, but the Tory-dominated committee raised the threshold to $400,000.
