The federal NDP says it’s out with concrete steps to fix the Nutrition North program.
MP’s say the Conservative policy has failed northerners and has done nothing to address the high cost of food in the north.
The party is out with a proposal to address the problem and it includes incorporating 50 isolated, fly-in communities that aren’t eligible for a full subsidy under the current Nutrition North provisions.
The plan includes creating a specific criteria for northern communities based on their current circumstances as well as working with all area communities to develop a long term strategy.
A recent Auditor General report found the program had minimal impact on food costs and lacked transparency and accountability.
