A Vermilion Bay company has been fined for two violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act after the dealth of an employee.
37-year-old Bryan Smith of Eagle River died in April of last year while operating a steam apparatus used to clear drill holes in rock at the Nelson Granite quarry just west of Vermilion Bay.
The Ministry of Labour says the apparatus had no operational safety mechansisms and was made by an employee who was not a qualified welder.
Nelson Granite pled guilty to two charges and has been fined 150-thousand.
