Service providers throughout the region are tackling Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
Creight Youth Services Director Jack Martin says area providers are forming a new committee aimed at helping everyone affected by the disorder.
Martin says FASD has a huge impact in northwestern Ontario and it’s not managed properly.
He says there’s a wealth of knowledge in this region and they need everyone to pull together to find a solution to the problem.
Martin says the committee will have reach throughout the Kenora and Rainy River districts, along with Treaty 3 and Nishnawbe-Aski Nation territory.
Martin stresses FASD is a lifelong illness and that early detection can prevent people from falling into substance abuse and mental health issues.
He notes only recently was FASD recognized provincially and they had to go to Western Canada for expertise on the subject.
