The importance of educating Canadians about the Indian Residential School System will be happening tonight in Sioux Lookout.
Sioux Lookout Anti-Racism Committee (SLARC) event will introduce a new educational tool- a digital oral history of Garnet Angeconeb’s life in the Pelican Residential School system.
In 30 short videos, Angeconeb, a Lac Seul First Nation shares how he struggled with belonging, sense of identity, having lost family life and his horrific account of being abused at school.
Co-producer of his website, Ashley Wright, tells CKDR what she hopes Angeconeb’s stories accomplish.
“That more Canadians will understand this part of Canadian history and by understanding it will lead to much better interaction between Aboriginals and non-Aboriginal people in Canada.”
The education tool will be introduced in local schools in Sioux Lookout.
Wright says, “It’s just not a tool for grade schools, it can be used in post-secondary, policing, hospitals, social work and political science.”
Angeconeb as well as Wright will be at the SLARC event tonight presenting the digital oral history and screening a documentary of Angeconeb’s life called, Garnet, Full Circle.
The event is open to the public and takes place at the Centennial Center in Sioux Lookout from 5-8 p.m.
