New Electricity Company Will Develop Trans Line

Goldcorp is teaming up with 13 First Nations to provide more efficient power to the remote North.
An agreement was signed today, allowing Wataynikaneyap Power to develop a transmission line that will connect communities powered by diesel generation.
Manager of Aboriginal Affairs with Goldcorp Adele Faubert says phase one of the project is a 300km line that will run through Pickle Lake and it should be finished by the end of 2015.
The second phase of the project will extend power north of Pickle Lake to 10 remote First Nations communities.
Faubert says about 1,200 construction jobs and 60 long-term jobs will be created.
This new development comes at the right time for these communities, as Faubert notes that they have been served by a line that’s at leas 70-years old and it’s at maximum capacity.
Open houses will be held starting in May or June, where the public will be able to find more information about the project, and the benefits it will bring to northern communities.
