New Employment Legislation Expected This Fall

After months of consultation, the Federal government is looking to introduce updated employment legislation this fall.

Labour Minister Patty Hajdu admits the House of Commons has a very busy calendar, but she will try and get the bill introduced as soon as possible.

The new legislation will deal with hours of work, wages, and holidays for employees and employers in federally regulated industries such as banking, telecommunications and transportation.

Hajdu says feedback received from Canadians found challenges around balancing work and life, unpredictable schedules and respecting collective bargaining agreements.

The Thunder Bay-Superior North MP says the Canada Labour Code hasn’t been reviewed or revised since the mid-60’s.

Hajdu stresses the changes will protect the most vulnerable workers.
