Canadian smokers can no longer avoid the in-your-face anti-smoking messages being plastered on the packages. As of June 19, the packs will be 75% covered in graphic pictures such as a cancer infected mouth and cancer stricken Barb Tarbox. Tarbox was an anti smoking activist before dying of lung cancer.
Roberta Lappage of the Northwestern Health says “package warnings kind of work 24 hours a day, so who ever has a package in their hand will see the message.”
The packages also feature a “quitline” and websites which can educate people about dangers of tobacco use.
In 2011, 1 in 5 Canadians aged 12 and older smoked on occasion or on a daily basis.
