Customs officers in Fort Frances have new powers.
Ottawa has granted them the ability to arrest people trying to enter Canada who have committed a criminal offence, rather than having to call police.
The new measures could include someone with an outstanding arrest warrant, or people suspected of crimes ranging from impaired driving to child abduction.
Customs officers at the Pigeon River crossing near Thunder Bay have had similar powers for the past two years.
