Ottawa has set aside money for a new elementary school
in the remote Northern community of Attawapiskat First Nation.
Elementary classes have been held in portables in the community
since 2000, when the original school was condemned.
Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus says he’s glad to see the
government has made the commitment to build the school.
That’s because over 400 students are now taking classes on a
toxic brownfield.
Residents in the community of 1,800 have
complained for years about fumes seeping into the portables.
Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan says ensuring that
students in Attawapiskat receive a quality education is a priority.
