After years of lobbying, including a campaign by its children, the Northern Ontario community of Attawapiskat is getting a new school.
Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl says construction of an elementary school is now in the department’s capital budget.
The remote community of 1,500 people has held elementary classes in portables since 2000, when the original school was condemned.
New Democrat MP Charlie Angus, who represents the community, says the school could cost up to $30,000.
The original school was condemned when a diesel leak contaminated the building and it was torn down more than a year ago.
