Northern Ontario is losing more manufacturing jobs.
Columbia Forest Products says it will shut down its particle board plant
in Hearst on November 12th, putting 83 people out of work.
The Oregon-based company blames a poor market, high energy bills and a
high Canadian dollar for the decision.
Domtar and the Saskatchewan Government have signed a deal to reopen a
big Northern pulp mill that was closed because of declines in the forestry
industry.
Premier Lorne Calvert says the government will contribute up to
$99.7-million in grants and equity to restart the complex in Prince
Albert, as well as a nearby sawmill.
It’s hoped the Prince Albert operation, which shut down in April 2006,
will be running again by the late summer or early fall of 2008.
