A massive fire at the Nipigon wood mill that triggered a state of
emergency and fears of a large evacuation was all but extinguished by early
Wednesday morning.
A Town volunteer firefighter says some wood in the Mill was `still
smouldering’ in spots, but there was no danger of a flare-up.
The fire is believed to have started early Tuesday around a lathe in
the 50-year-old mill.
There were no injuries.
Some residents in the town of about 1,500 were prepared
to evacuate to Red Rock.
Officials say no wide-scale evacuation was required, but residents of
about 10 houses on a street bordering the mill did leave as a precaution.
A state of emergency remains in effect as the Town’s water supply has been drained.
