The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service isn’t happy with the government’s decision to approve a generic form of Oxycontin.
Deputy Chief Bob Herman says that First Nation’s communities are already severely impacted by Oxycontin and providing a generic alternative is only going to add to the growing problem.
In this past year, NAPS officers have seized over one million dollars worth of the drug, and have prevented it from ending up in other communities.
However, not only is the drug a problem but the NAPS will lose one of their drug enforcement officers due to the government no longer funding the Police Officer Recruitment Fund after March 2013.
Herman says he can expect to see more drug-related activity as criminal organizations from across the province target NAN communities.
An 81mg pill of the drug sells for about 600 dollars.
