The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association feels power needs are being overlooked because of our location.
President Dave Canfield says the province and energy companies still don’t have the right numbers for how much power will be needed when the mining sector takes off.
Canfield says the north doesn’t have the infrastructure or transmission lines in place to meet future demands.
He stresses they have been sounding the alarm bell for years now but the government hasn’t taken action.
Canfield says if we were in southern Ontario, this issue would have been addressed months ago.
Canfield adds that a big concern is the conversion of the Thunder Bay generating station from coal to gas.
He is recommending the Thunder Bay generating station be converted to gas with a back up plan in place to use coal.
Canfield notes we could experience blackouts in 2 years time.
