The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association is asking the Wynne government to bump up the Harmonized Sales Tax.
Spokesperson Larry Hebert is suggesting a 1% hike in the HST, with the guarantee that the revenue be spent on local infrastructure projects.
Hebert says the move will help municipal leaders deal with significant infrastructure shortfalls and take the pressure off taxpayers.
NOMA is also pushing for changes in the way railways are taxed in the province.
Right now rail companies are taxed on the property they own.
Hebert wants them charged by the weight of the cargo they haul.
