NOMA Boss Taking Wait And See Approach On Federal Budget

The devil is in the details.

That’s the reaction from the President of the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association to this week’s federal budget.

Canfield says he’s glad to see $11.9-billion earmarked for infrastructure projects, but it’s unclear if all municipalities will be able to benefit.

He notes they still need specific details on how and when the money can be accessed and spent.

Canfield says some of the funding has been set aside for transit projects, which won’t help many municipalities here in northwestern Ontario.

He’s also pointing to a $2-billion commitment for water and wastewater projects, which would cover half of the cost for municipal projects.

However, local leaders, including Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance and Dryden Mayor Greg Wilson says they can’t afford their share of the funding.
