Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association President Dave Canfield says the region has enough problems and shouldn’t help fund the Metrolinx upgrades in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
Canfield says the province needs to get into consultations before making any decisions to raise taxes.
The proposal to be decided on next spring includes a 5-cents per litre gas tax and a 1-percent sales tax increase.
Canfield notes Ontario already has one of the highest gas taxes around and stresses we can’t afford to pay any more.
He says gas prices in the northwest are already 12-cents higher than in Manitoba.
Canfield says talks need to take place to ensure any increases to fund the upgrades are on a strictly regional basis.
