A proposed Municipal Land Transfer Tax is getting the thumbs down from the President of the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association.
Finance Minister Charles Sousa says they are consulting municipalities across the province about the proposed new tax.
Dave Canfield says it’s not something they would take advantage of.
Canfield admits it could be a useful tool for cash-strapped municipalities, though property owners are less likely to embrace yet another new tax.
Canfield adds most municipalities have already rejected the idea of imposing development charges and suggests the Municipal Land Transfer Tax would fall under the same category.
