Northern Ridings not safe

A private members bill designed to protect the number of ridings in northern Ontario has failed to garner enough
support in the House of Commons.

A Sudbury-area M.P. introduced Bill C-290 to parliament on Wednesday night that would guarantee the north would always have 10 seats in the House.

Kenora M.P. Roger Valley says he’s disappointed that the Conservative government refused to support the legislation.

N002 Q: …welfare. (11 secs.)

Valley says the bill would have guaranteed northern Ontario at least 10 seats, regardless of how much the
population in the region decreased.

The Ontario government supported similar legislation last year.
