The Northwestern Health Unit has issued an ultimatum to municipalities in the region to pass a smoke-free workplace bylaw or face legal action.
This has promted Dryden City Council to vote on a smoke-free workplace bylaw at the June 10th council meeting.
The bylaw will go through first and second readng at the regular meeting.
Bill Limerick, an environmental team leader with the health unit, says communities should have adopted smoke-free bylaws years ago.
Limerick compares exposure to second-hand smoke to drinking and driving.
He wants Dryden City Council to lead the region by following Ear Falls and adopting a bylaw.
The health unit says a smoke-free workplace bylaw must be implemented by the spring of 2003 or legal action will be taken against municipalities such as Dryden.
