NSR Suing Provincial Government

North Superior Resources has filed a $110-million lawsuit against the provincial government.
The Sudbury mining firm says the government has failed to discharge its “constitutional duty” to engage First Nations on its behalf.
The company claims they have now lost their right to explore a vast area of northwestern Ontario.
NSR is seeking damages for lost potential income after being kicked off Sachigo Lake First Nation.
According to a statement of claim, which has been filed with the Ontario Superior Court, band officials demanded $2.4-million or the company would not be welcomed back.
Sachigo Lake First Nation Chief Alvin Beardy is disputing the claim in an interview with the Toronto Star.
Beardy says they are still wondering why the company stopped exploration on its three land claims where they were testing for gold and diamond deposits.
Minister of Northern Development and Mines Michael Gravelle tells the Toronto Star that it’s his understanding that ministry staff have made efforts over the past year to engage with both the company and the First Nation.
Gravelle adds staff have offered to facilitate discussions between the two sides.
The company’s claim hasn’t been proven in court.
