October 31, 1933 – August 26, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Wall, who passed away peacefully on August 26, 2026, at the age of 92.
Born on October 31, 1933, in Dryden, Ontario, Robert lived a long and meaningful life deeply rooted in family, farming, hard work, and service to his community.
Robert attended Aubrey School for Grades 1 through 8 before attending Dryden High School. During his first two years of high school, he lived with his sister, Etta Findlay, north of Dryden. During his third year, he worked at Jack Adams’ farm in Oxdrift and travelled by bus to school. His first job was at Joe’s Grocery in Dryden in 1948–49.
Agriculture became a lifelong passion for Robert. In 1952, he took over the family farm and, in 1965, purchased the farm from his father. Farming remained an important part of his life for many years, and he was proud to be involved in the agricultural community.
Robert’s dedication to agriculture led him to serve in many organizations and positions. He was a lifetime member of the Soil and Crop Association, serving several terms as president. He was also involved with the Beef Improvement Association, Agricultural Society, Kenora District Junior Farmers Association, Kenora District Seed Growers Association, Ontario Farm Improvement Association, and the Cloverbelt Co-op Store.
In 1964, Robert became an A.I. technician, a position he held until 1986. He became a licensed drainage contractor in 1978 and also worked as a crop insurance agent for 13 years beginning in 1976. He served as a coordinator with the Ontario Agricultural Training Institute and as a workshop leader with the Ontario Farm Plan.
Over the years, Robert was always willing to take on a new challenge. He operated a strawberry U-pick for approximately 10 years and was involved in the operation of a licensed abattoir during the 1990s.
His commitment to his community extended beyond agriculture. Robert served as a trustee for both the Aubrey and Oxdrift School Boards. He was also a Pathmaster with the Aubrey Statute of Labour Board, later becoming chairman and serving in that role until 2017.
Robert also received his bus driver’s licence in 1969 and drove bus full-time for approximately five years.
In 1955, Robert married the love of his life, Joan Wall, and together they built a life filled with family, farming, and community. Their years together were a testament to a lifetime of partnership and shared memories.
Robert will be lovingly remembered by his children, Joanne (Hermann) and Tim of Oxdrift; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his many nieces and nephews, including his great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Joan, grandson Matthew and granddaughter Marsha.
Robert was also a dedicated member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 41, proudly receiving his 50-year membership pin in 2025. He served as president for 10 years and held numerous other positions throughout his years with the Legion, including five years as Zone Commander for Zone 73.
Robert leaves behind a remarkable legacy of family, farming, leadership, and service. His life touched generations of family, friends, neighbours, fellow farmers, and members of the many organizations to which he devoted his time.
He will be remembered for the life he built, the work he was proud of, and the many contributions he made to the community he called home.
His hands may be at rest now, but the life he built and the legacy he leaves behind will continue through the many generations of family who loved him.
A Celebration of Life – Come and Go Tea will take place on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, from 4-6pm at the Oxdrift Community Hall. Interment will take place at a later date.
