Sinclair “Morris” Stewart

May 26, 1941 – December 25, 2021

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Sinclair “Morris” Stewart. He passed away at the Dryden Hospital on December 25, 2021 of heart failure, with his loving wife by his side.

Morris was born on May 26, 1941 at the Red Cross Hospital in Dryden Ontario to Frederick “Alex” and Caroline (Winfield) Stewart. In 1905, Morris’ grandparents immigrated from southern Ontario to Saskatchewan, finally settling in Eagle River Ontario in 1927. They were given 160 acres of land, upon clearing a portion as new settles. Caroline Winfield’s family settled in Waldhof around 1923 clearing land making a farm. Alex and Caroline married in 1940. They purchased an 80-acre parcel of land adjoining the old Winfield homestead. In 1951, the homestead house burnt and left the family living in a fixed-up chicken coop. Alex and 10-year-old Morris cut down trees and built a new house for the family.

During the summers he would guide tourists on Eagle Lake. He became quite the fisherman. Growing up in Waldhof, being the oldest child, he was responsible for many chores around the family farm. He cut and split fire wood, tending to the farm animals, carrying water from the well before walking 4 miles to school. Any money he earned contributed to buy clothes, books and whatever was needed by the family.

After graduating grade 12 in 1959, he found a job at Canadian Propane, installing propane heaters and delivering fuel to private homes. During this time, he lived in Fort Frances, Quibell and Vermillion Bay. In 1970, he secured a job at Colenso Sawmill, north of Vermillion Bay. He then moved to the mill in Dryden in the Sawmill division. During this time, he met Gloria in 1995. Taking a shine to her, he made her his forever loving wife. They spent time together, travelling to the Mediterranean seeing Italy, Monaco, Spain, cruising the Caribbean, Florida and parts of Canada. He retired in 2006, at the age of 65. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He also enjoyed reading old western books. His favourite pie was coconut cream and he really enjoyed the butter tarts that his step-daughter made him.

Morris is predeceased by his parents Frederick “Alex” and Caroline Stewart, brother Wallace and sister Leona.

Morris is survived by his loving wife Gloria (Lucier) Stewart, sisters Hazel Baxter and Harriet Johnston, and chosen brother Joseph Winfield. 3 Stewart children Blaine, Carol and Janet, step-daughter Lottie (Chris) Lavoie, step-sons Jason and Granger Lucier. Also survived by numerous grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many other brother/sister-in-laws.

Morris has been cremated and interment at a later date. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Dryden Food Bank, through Stevens Funeral Homes, PO Box 412, Dryden, Ontario P8N 2Z1
