A Kenora jail guard says it’s time to make corrections an essential service.
James Nowe says the province needs to step up to the plate after a rash of inmate clashes inside provincial institutions.
Nowe says, just like Thunder Bay, the Kenora jail is understaffed and over crowded.
He notes there are situations where one guard is assigned to 20 inmates.
Nowe wants to see a hiring freeze lifted as OPSEU continues their labour strife with the province.
He’s reacting to this weeks hostage taking at the Thunder Bay jail.
