The Ontario Medical Association has jumped on board a campaign that started in northwestern Ontario.
The OMA is urging the provincial government to pass Bill 131, legislation that would ban the sale of kid-friendly flavoured tobacco.
Flavour Gone started the campaign years ago at a local level.
OMA President Dr. Scott Wooder says cigarette manufacturers are masking the deadly taste of tobacco with flavours like grape, sour apple and watermelon that obviously appeal to children.
The legislation would also touch on a hot button issue here at home and that’s a ban on smoking in restaurant and bar patios, hospital grounds and sports fields used by children.
It would also prohibit the sale of all types of tobacco on government and university properties.
Dr. Wooder is demanding the speedy passage of the bill now that the Legislature has resumed sitting.
The Northwestern Health Unit is also calling for MPP’s to move the vote forward.
