On-Line Aboriginal Grad Program A Success

An on-line diploma program based in Balmertown continues to see an increase in participant numbers.

A record 17 graduates from nine First Nations recently graduated from the Keewaytinook Internet High School program.

The program was launched in 1999 to focus on the completion of Grade 9, but has expanded to include the full scope of the Ontario secondary curriculum with supports from Special Education, co-operative education and adult learning.

Officials say some of the graduates intend to pursue specific job-based training, while others plan to attend College or University.

The student of the year award went to Sundance Patayash from Weagamow First Nation.

Other main awards included Best Attendance (Waylon Harper-Keewaywin), Most Community Involvement Hours (Darian Bluecoat-Fort Severn), Highest Average in Eight Courses (Sundance Patayash-Weagamow) and Graduate Award of Excellence (Jessilyn Winters-Weagamow)
