The Ministry of Natural Resources is reminding local residents to ensure all campfires are dead out with water and cold on touch before leaving the site.
The reminder comes after charges were laid under the Forest Fires Prevention Act following an incident in the Hillock Lake area, about 40-kilometres east of Kenora.
A conservation officer found a campfire smouldering and unattended and a group of people later admitted they were at that site and had a fire the evening before.
The MNR says even if a fire looks like it’s put out, it can still have burning embers underneath and can fan back into life later.
Failing to fully put out a fire can result in a $1,000 fine, or up to three months in jail.
The penalties are more severe if the campfire turns into a wildfire.
