Ontario’s top public health officer says the flu shot can be life-saving and not just for those getting vaccinated.
Dr. David Williams says getting the free shot means you could avoid passing it on to anyone within coughing or sneezing distance.
Dr. David Williams says high-risk groups include anyone under the age of 5 or over the age of 65.
Those with weak immune systems should also get the vaccine, noting not doing so could lead to hospitalization or even death.
Dr. Williams says the vaccine is the best defence against the flu and is urging everyone to get it as soon as possible.
The vaccine protects against four strains of influenza and usually takes up to two weeks to build up immunity.
He says once the flu takes over, it’s often like getting hit by a truck, and he urges everyone who starts feeling symptoms to stay home.
