Provincial park visitors will no longer be restricted to a campsite with their alcohol.
The province is relaxing the rules to allow drinking at other areas, such as park beaches, picnic areas and other day-use spaces.
Parks Minister Todd McCarthy expects people to drink responsibly.
“Staff will continue to monitor and ensure compliance with rules and regulations to keep our parks as safe, family-friendly and enjoyable for everyone as they have always been,” says McCarthy.
“They will ensure that alcohol is consumed only where it is allowed, all empty containers are disposed of properly, and the rules around noise and respect for others are met.”
The changes do not remove localized alcohol bans, often placed at some parks during the May long weekend.
Parks will post signage to identify areas that will remain alcohol-free.
This would include sites of cultural or historical significance, buildings where food and drink are already restricted and areas that may pose significant safety risks.
McCarthy sees the changes enhancing the park experience for visitors and boosting local tourism.
The changes to the alcohol laws in parks will take effect this year.
