The Ontario government insists it’s doing its due diligence on the Energy East Pipeline project.
But that will not include a full provincial environmental assessment.
Energy minister Bob Chiarelli says they have asked for intervener status at the National Energy Board hearings.
Chiarelli says by the time they are ready to make the submissions for the review, they won’t have the opportunity to complete an assessment.
He stresses they are ahead of the game with consultations and public input.
The NDP want Ontario to follow in the footsteps of both B.C. and Quebec, which demand environmental assessments of any pipeline project.
