Ontario Regional Chief Calling For Changes In Education System

Ontario Regional Chief Stan Beardy is calling for more cultural support in publicly-funded schools.

It comes after the release of the People for Education’s 2015 Annual Report that shows public schools aren’t providing enough opportunities for students to learn about First Nations people and cultures.

The document shows that although 96% of secondary schools have aboriginal students enrolled, only 11% offer native language programs.

The report also shows public school teachers aren’t receiving enough training on aboriginal issues.

Only 29% of elementary schools and 47% of high schools offer training on aboriginal issues to teachers.
