Ontario Regional Chief Calling For Inquiry Following Fatal Fire

Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day says Pikangikum’s house fire tragedy, which claimed the lives of six adults and three children, is the direct result of chronic poverty and third world living conditions.

Day says First Nations communities need to be brought into the 21st century and substandard is not a standard that they can live with any longer.

Day adds there are no fire fighting services in Pikangikum and 95% of the homes do not have running water.

He is calling for an immediate coroner’s inquest based upon the social, economic, and cultural factors that led to this tragedy.
