OPP Commissioner Lewis Hands Out Awards

A number of OPP officers across Northwestern Ontario were honoured Thursday at a special ceremony in Dryden.
5-civilian staff and 4-officers were thanked for 20-years of service.
OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis says 14 officers received Commendation for their work during an incident in Pikangikum last June.
Upset over the way a community member was treated, 200-residents stormed the Pikangikum OPP station, causing extensive damage and disabling power and telephone service.
The incident resulted in a lengthy and tension filled stand-off.
Lewis says the officers handled the situation perfectly.
He stresses the OPP now has a strong relationship with the remote First Nation community.
Kenora OPP Officer Kathryn Moyer received the Commissioner’s Citation for Bravery for her courageous actions with a knife wielding woman in downtown Kenora last Summer.
Several local residents also received awards for assisting OPP.
Melissa Zilkins and Margaret Crigger of Dryden and Kevin Roussin of Eagle River were recognized for their efforts in trying to revive a motorist who crashed his car on Highway 594 last October.
The man had a history of heart problems, but the 3-worked tirelessly to get him to Hospital where he later died.
Former Ear Falls Mayor Jim Desmarais was also honoured.
Last September, Desmarais helped rescue a woman who was trapped in her car when she swerved off the road to avoid a deer on Highway 105.
