OPP Enforcing Move Over Law

Over the long weekend, the Ontario Provincial Police is asking drivers to help reinforce the importance of Ontario’s Move Over law.
The law requires drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated.
Sergeant Shelley Garr with the OPP in northwestern Ontario says if the highway has more than one lane, the law requires the driver to move over and leave one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle.
Since 1989, 5 OPP officers have been killed as a result of being struck by a vehicle, while doing their job on the roadside.
There were 12 charges in 2010 and then it jumped to 32 charges in 2013.
Garr says failure to move over can result in a fine of $400-$2,000 and 3 demerit points.
