Two Dryden schools are recognizing Orange Shirt Day Monday.
Laura Prior and Rachel Gessie were guests on the CKDR Morning Show today to promote the day.
Prior, who is the FNMY Four Directions Lead Coach at Dryden High School, says the day grew out of a story about a young student having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school in Mission, B.C.
She says It has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools.
Gessie says the day is important because the impacts of residential schools on survivors, their families and those who never came home continue today.
She notes the last school closed in 1996.
There will be an event at DHS from 11:30am until 3:00pm, with food, giveaways, draws and a large collaborative art project.
It will be held at the Four Directions room (119), but you must sign-in at the office.
It’s open to anyone in the community.
Students at St. Joseph’s Catholic school are also being urged to wear orange to honour the experience of all residential school students and demonstrate a commitment to healing.
