The Ontario Black Bear Association says there are almost 200 orphaned bear cubs at four rehab centres across the province.
Ironically, when the Harris Government cancelled the spring bear hunt in 1999, it claimed it was doing so because of the possibility of orphaning one bear cub.
Lorna Wood, Dryden-based Vice-President of the O-B-B-A says there was never a problem with orphaned bear cubs when there was a spring bear hunt.
Wood adds when the office of the Minister of Natural Resources was contacted recently about reinstating the spring bear hunt, the reponse was “when the Pope announces his marriage”.
Wood says this attitude shows how the province has a blatant disregard for the wildlife of the province.
