Panel Looking At First Nations Fire Deaths

The process is now underway to investigate Ontario First Nations fire deaths over the last ten years.

Ontario’s Deputy Chief Coroner Jim Sproule says a panel will consist of the Fire Marshal, a forensic pathologist, epidemiologist and data analysts.

They will be examining 30-fires involving a total of 55-fatalities.

They will be collecting information on the circumstances on each fire and each person who passed away.

Each fire will have a separate file which will be collected as data.

Sproule stresses the idea of his study is not to lay blame.

He says the real hope is to improve public safety and prevent future fires.

The report is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
