The owner of a regional gold mine has agreed to pay nearly $440,000 after being convicted of an Occupational Health and Safety Act
violation in connection with a 2004 fatality.
Placer Dome was charged a year after the body of 34-year-old Chris White
of ignace was found in a 20-metre underground cavern at the musselwhite
mine.
A judge found the company failed to take every precaution reasonable for
the protection of a worker
Placer Dome, which no longer owns the mine after a buy-out by
Toronto-based Barrick Gold, will pay $350,000, plus a
25% victim fine surcharge of about $87,000.
