18-elementary schools from across the region competed in the Cardboard Boat Races in Dryden on Tuesday.
The Grade 7 and 8 students were handed cardboard, duct tape and contact cement and were tasked to construct a boat that would stay afloat.
The students then found out how long their boat could stay above water as they raced them at the Dryden Pool.
The races were videotaped and one lucky team may have a shot at competing in the Province-wide event.
The event was hosted by Skills Canada-Ontario and Spokesperson Karen Troupe says it’s aimed at promoting skills trades and technology.
Troupe says it’s an opportunity to receive hands on training as they are designing, building and creating something unique.
Troupe notes they are trying to generate interest early on.
She says they hope that these students will gravitate to skills trades and tech programs once they get to High School.
